about

ElectroBloom concludes with a piano sonata that acts as an epilogue to the narrative. Composed over the summer of 2016-2017, it uses the Classical sonata form in all three movements. The primary themes were composed using a variation of the Japanese Insen scale.

II. Adagio

In this movement, the exposition commences on the sub-dominant scale degree (G) with the opening phrase of the first subject consisting of major 7th, minor and augmented triads. The modal key area interchanges between the whole tone scale and the Lydian mode, with flourishes of jazz harmonies. After a brief transition using a Neopolitan major scale on B and variation of the accompaniment on the opening theme, the second subject is introduced. The right hand returns to the Neopolitan scale introduced previously, whereas the left hand contrasts with atonal accompaniment. The exposition closes by flowing directly into the development.

Here the Insen scale in reintroduced and undergoes several modulations. Unlike the allegro, the development in the adagio does not include any repeated material from the exposition. Using a perfect cadence, it transitions into the recapitulation, where the first and second subjects feature further accompaniment variation. The adagio is rounded off with a gentle coda and a perfect cadence, creating symmetry by concluding on the same G Major 7th chord the movement begins with.
